Valentina

Veterinary Surgeon

My name is Valentina, also known as Val, and I am a Veterinary Surgeon working in Medivet Faygate 24h with a permanent role since January 2024. I come from Sardinia, one of the main islands in Italy. Despite my love for my home country, I have always been passionate about other cultures and languages. English has been the first foreign language I learned. Since I was a small child, I enjoyed spending time in nature and approaching all sorts of animals, including earwigs. During my studies, I was mainly interested in science and biology, and in my spare time I was obsessed with horse riding, which I would define as my first love. Animals and science fused together led me to my career in veterinary medicine. After graduating, I focused more on Equine Medicine, completing a PhD in Italy and then working in Ireland as an intern in an Equine hospital. After that amazing experience, I realized I was missing something, so I decided to start as a Small Animal Vet in the UK, and here I am! My main interest is diagnostic imaging, with a particular focus on ultrasonography, but I also enjoy sports medicine and soft tissue surgery. I am currently a member of European Association of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. I have a cat and her name is Mousse because she is the sweetest thing ever! We also call her Mussi (common cat name in Sardinia). She lives with my partner in Italy, where I go as often as I can. I do believe in the concept of One Health, according to which humans, animals, and nature are inextricably connected.

I qualified as a veterinary surgeon at USAMV Cluj Napoca, Romania. I joined Medivet in January 2023 and initially, I started as a floating vet between the majority of the branches within the area until I became permanent in our lovely regional hospital Medivet Faygate 24h. I have a particular interest in internal medicine, ECC and feline medicine in which I’d like to do a certificate for in the near future. I am a proud mum of a domestic short hair cat called Piciuski and a German Sheppard called Bruno that are constantly motivating me to become a better vet and to treat all the furry friends as they were my own.

  • Aimee – Postgraduate Certificate Holder in Small Animal Cardiology

Aimee is an experienced veterinary surgeon with a Postgraduate Certificate in Small Animal Cardiology. She offers advanced heart diagnostics for dogs and cats, including auscultation (listening to heart and lung sounds), echocardiography (heart ultrasound), and ECG (electrical activity and rhythm assessment). These detailed investigations enable early detection of heart murmurs, arrhythmias, and cardiac disease, ensuring each pet receives a personalised treatment and monitoring plan for long-term heart health.

Aimee is fully qualified and accredited to perform pre-breeding heart screenings, providing official certificates for auscultations and echocardiograms. Alongside her cardiology interest, she also has a strong interest in diagnostic ultrasound, performing abdominal scans and ultrasound-guided procedures such as biopsies, helping achieve accurate diagnoses and optimal outcomes for every patient.

  • Fern - Veterinary Surgeon with an interest in Veterinary Dentistry

Fern is an experienced veterinary surgeon with a particular interest in Veterinary Dentistry. She has always loved dentistry and, for the past nine years, has focused her career in veterinary dentistry only, working across East and West Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire.

She offers comprehensive dental care for dogs and cats including oral health checks, ultrasonic scale and polish treatments under general anaesthesia, extractions as needed, and also tailored after-care plans.

Fern's focus on dentistry helps with the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease, tooth resorption, tooth fractures, abrasion and attrition, and oral pain and discomfort.

She is passionate about what she does and is always happy to help with oral checks. She will listen to the owner's concerns and will guide them through the best way to deal with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention advice and options, and also helps the owners with their concerns regarding general anaesthesia safety and anaesthetic protocols, pre and post -operative care and prevention options.

Oral health and a pain free mouth are welfare issues and need our focus and attention. Our pets rarely show signs of oral pain even though one or more oral conditions can be present in the mouth without the owner realising it - they can be very good at hiding oral pain and discomfort. Look out for halitosis (bad breath), pawing at the mouth, drooling or excessive salivation, unable to eat as before but wanting to eat, or avoiding certain hard food or chews.
