Rabbit vaccinations: why they matter

Rabbits in the UK need protection against two serious diseases: myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD). Both are covered under the plan.
Myxomatosis spreads through biting insects, which means indoor rabbits can still be at risk. RHD, including the more recent RVHD2 strain, can spread through direct contact with infected rabbits and can persist in the environment for some time.

Health checks and the signs rabbits hide

Rabbits are prey animals. They're very good at not showing when something is wrong. By the time a rabbit looks unwell, things can sometimes already be quite serious.

That's one reason the twice-yearly health check is especially useful. It gives a vet a proper look at your rabbit's weight, teeth, coat, eyes, ears, and general condition at a time when your rabbit may seem perfectly fine to you.

Rabbit healthcare plan vs pet insurance

The Medivet rabbit health plan covers planned, routine preventive care: vaccinations, health checks, parasite protection, nail clips, and the other benefits listed above.

Pet insurance covers the unexpected: illness, accidents, and injury. You pay a monthly premium to your insurer and submit a claim when your rabbit needs treatment for something unplanned.

Many owners choose to have both at the same time. The plan looks after your rabbit's routine health. Insurance looks after the unexpected.

The plan includes annual vaccinations against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD), twice-yearly health checks with a vet, clinically appropriate parasite protection, and microchipping if your rabbit hasn't already been chipped. It also includes two nail clips per year, two 2kg bags of Timothy hay, and savings on dental procedures, prescription medication, and veterinary care. Inclusions may vary slightly by clinic, so it's worth checking with your local Medivet team.

The rabbit healthcare plan is £12 per month. The monthly payment is fixed, with no additional charges for included services on top of that. Prices are reviewed periodically, so your local Medivet clinic is the best place to confirm the current fee before you join. An optional Unlimited consultations add-on is also available, ask your clinic for details.

The plan includes annual vaccinations against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD), including protection against the RVHD2 strain. Annual boosters are recommended to keep protection up to date. Myxomatosis spreads through biting insects and can affect indoor rabbits, so the vaccination is relevant regardless of where your rabbit lives. Your vet will advise on the right schedule.

Rabbits can join the plan at any age, from young rabbits starting their first vaccination course through to older rabbits that benefit from closer monitoring. Your vet will carry out a brief clinical check when you join to make sure the plan is set up correctly for your rabbit. Speak to your local Medivet team if you're unsure whether it's the right fit.

The plan covers planned, routine preventive care. It doesn't cover treatment for illness, injuries, accidents, or conditions your rabbit had before joining. A pre-existing condition doesn't automatically stop your rabbit from joining the plan, but it won't be covered under the plan's benefits. Your local Medivet team can talk you through what the plan includes for your rabbit specifically before you sign up.

Yes. Two nail clips per year and two 2kg bags of Timothy hay per year are included as part of the rabbit plan. Both are arranged through your local clinic. Conditions apply to the hay benefit, so your clinic team will confirm how this works when you join.

The plan covers routine preventive care and does not include emergency or out-of-hours treatment. If your rabbit needs urgent attention, contact your local Medivet practice straight away. They will advise on the right next step and direct you to emergency care if needed. Pet insurance is worth considering for unexpected illness or injury costs.

The plan is registered to your chosen Medivet clinic. If you move or want to change practice, speak to your local Medivet team about your options. A minimum term applies to the plan. Your clinic team will explain the full terms, including the cancellation policy, before you sign up.

***A nose-to-tail health check is a routine veterinary exam for a pet that appears healthy. It helps catch problems early and monitor overall health. Health checks may be performed by a vet or a nurse. It is not intended as an examination for a pet with a health issue, be it a new or ongoing condition. This requires a consultation with a vet which is chargeable at our standard rate.
