Our Regular Pet Care Advice
Advice on Regular Pet Care
It’s always good to keep a check on your pet’s health. Follow our simple guide on regular pet care to keep them healthy and happy.
Keep your pet healthy and happy with regular checks
Keeping on top of regular pet care is incredibly important for your pet’s health. Fortunately, there are plenty of checks you can do in the comfort of your own home to help keep them healthy
As well as these quick and easy checks, don’t forget that there are some regular treatments that need to be performed by your vet to ensure your pet gets the best care.
Coat care
Grooming is a great way to bond with your pet while helping to keep their coat shiny and their skin healthy.
Incorporate regular grooming sessions into your pet’s routine. Different breeds need different levels of grooming, so speak with your vet to find out exactly what your pet needs.
Grooming your pet is also a perfect time to look out for any cuts, lumps, fleas, and ticks.
Ear health
More than being pretty, our pets’ ears can be a perfect breeding ground for nasty bacteria. Foreign objects can also become lodged inside, causing discomfort and sometimes infection.
Check your pet’s ears regularly and look out for things like grass seed blockages, discharge, wax and any unusual smells.
Perfect paws
Our pet’s feet face a lot of wear and tear from everyday life, so it’s important to give them a regular once over.
After a walk or a trip outside, check your pet’s legs and feet, taking particular time to look between their toes. Keep an eye out for grass seeds, stones and small cuts in the skin, as well as any reddening or swelling.
Teeth hygiene
Roughly 95% of cats and dogs experience dental disease in their lifetimes, so keeping on top of dental hygiene is a must for pet owners.
Like us, pets need regular teeth cleaning, so try and brush their teeth every day. If you notice loss of appetite, persistent bad breath, bleeding or red gums, this could be a sign of dental disease.
If you suspect your pet might have dental disease, make an appointment to speak with your local Medivet vet and get some expert advice.
Appetite
Changes in appetite can be one of the biggest indicators that something’s wrong with your pet. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on their food and water intake.
If they seem to be consuming much more or less than usual, it could be a sign that something’s not right internally, so speak to your local vet for a full check.
Regular vet care
Bring your pet in for regular pet health checks at your local Medivet vet - we usually recommend about once every six months, unless your vet suggests otherwise. Ask about our healthcare plan, which includes much of the regular care below:
- Vaccination: your pet will need a vaccination once per year to protect them against a range of diseases
- Parasites: one flea can bite up to 400 times a day, so regular flea treatment is a must
- Dental: professional teeth cleaning and check-ups help prevent plaque and tartar which can damage teeth and gums
- Weight: it can be difficult to tell your pet’s weight just by looking at them, so regular weight checks can monitor any dramatic weight gain or loss
- Health check: our pets can’t tell us when they’re feeling poorly, so regular nose-to-tail health checks with your vet are important to monitor their overall wellbeing
