Thea Patterson

Branch Partner and Veterinary Surgeon

I've been at the practice since 2014 and became branch partner in January 2019. I enjoy all aspects of being a vet and hold a post-graduate certificate in small animal medicine. I love meeting new people and their pets, as well as seeing all of the old favourites back for visits. In my spare time, I am normally out running, socialising, travelling or walking my naughty chihuahua, Mo.

I have been nursing for 10 years and became head nurse at Potters Bar after a short break to have my two boys. I enjoy all aspects of nursing, including training our students and being in charge of a lot of the practice admin and finance. I have a labrador called Brooke who keeps me busy, along with my family!

I became head nurse at Potters Bar shortly after qualifying. I have always had a passion for animal welfare and grew up with animals. I volunteered in a monkey sanctury in the Amazon rainforest and hope to visit again some day!

Crawley's Story

Crawley came into us for a routine health check as part of the Medivet Healthcare Plan. Our vet Thea gave him a thorough check over and noticed that he had a lump on his left hind leg. Aspirates were taken for cytology which revealed that the lump was a mast cell tumour - a cancerous skin tumour. These tumours can also affect other areas of the body, including the spleen, liver and gastrointestinal tract, so staging firstly included a full blood count, and an abdominal ultrasound scan with samples of the liver and spleen taken. Fortunately, these came back all clear, so Crawley was given the go ahead for surgery.

Surgical excision of mast cell tumours is most successful where wide margins can be achieved. For this reason, Crawley was transferred to our Enfield hospital, where our experienced surgeon Dave was able to remove the lump. Due to the awkward location on the back of his leg, an ipsilateral caudal superficial epigastric axial pattern flap was required to close the wound. This involved removing a portion of tissue from the underside of his body and wrapping it round to the back leg to close the wound. A suction drain was placed to allow excess fluid from the surgical site to drain. Crawley recovered remarkably well from surgery.

His wound required a lot of maintenance including emptying the drain and cleaning the site daily. His family were very dedicated and committed to helping him heal successfully. He had lots of follow up checks with the nurses and vets and finally, after around 4 weeks - he was given the all clear. The histology report deemed that the cancer had been fully removed with adequate margins which was fantastic news. Crawley has been an absolute superstar and we are so pleased that we have been able to look after him.

Absolutely love this practice! The staff always go the extra mile. We love Thea the vet who has been with us with for years. She supported us with our previous dog who had chronic health conditions. I wouldn’t go anywhere else 12years & counting 🤣

I live several miles away and have a vet 500m from my house. I will always come here as the standard of vet is very high. But just as important is the lovely nature of the staff, with such a friendly can do disposition.

Receptionist on a power trip, asked when the next available appointment is as my pet is in a lot of pain and she begins to beat around the bush and ask me questions to put me on the system then gives me attitude when I simply asked for the appointment time!! When you're calling regarding an emergency be ready to fill out your profile while your pet is in unimaginable pain. AVOID!

The most important thing for me and my fur babies is accessibility to vets quickly and no jargon explanations. I prefer seeing the same vets for continuity but if they handle my girls appropriately and answer my questions to my satisfaction I am happy. I have not had cause to find fault with Thea and her team and hope that continues.
