Maggie Franklin

Veterinary Surgeon

Maggie grew up on a small family farm on the outskirts of York and knew from around the age of seven that she wanted to become a vet. The first in her family to attend university, she graduated from Bristol in 1984. She has spent the past 39 years in first opinion veterinary practice, beginning her career in Castle Cary before moving to Langport. Over 12 years ago, she joined Jon Power in Somerton, where she has continued to serve the local community with dedication. Maggie takes great pride in caring for the people and pets of these vibrant market towns and values her role within the community. She particularly enjoys being on the front line of veterinary care, with a special interest in treating the itchy, smelly skin and ear conditions that can cause significant distress to pets and their carers. Outside of work, Maggie is a proud mother to two daughters, now aged 25 and 31, and a devoted, hands-on grandmother two afternoons a week. In her spare time, she loves being outdoors gardening, walking, and cycling, as well as volunteering at a local community shop and café. She also has a deep appreciation for music and loves to dance.

Head Veterinary Nurse

I'm a Registered Veterinary Nurse at Medivet Somerton, where I’ve been part of the team since October 2024. I qualified in February 2024 after working in different sectors of the veterinary industry since 2019. I have a particular interest in dental care, nutrition and inpatient nursing, making sure our patients are comfortable and well-cared for is the most rewarding part of my job. Outside of work, you'll often find me spending time with my dog, trying out new gym classes, baking sweet treats, or being the fun auntie with my niece and nephew.

We were very pleased with our first visit to the vet with our new puppy and the ‘free new puppy’ check was a great bonus. Both the vet and receptionist were welcoming and very helpful with their advice. We’re definitely pleased to have chosen Medivet Somerton!

Reception is always clean & tidy. The staff are always tentative towards the animals. The vet was thorough during our appointment and explained everything. A good visit.

The Somerton practise has always been fantastic, welcoming, friendly, competent. They have always been open and honest about recommending treatment that is necessary, whilst also giving you further options to think about. The Dorchester out of hours which I used recently were outstanding also. The journey to Dorchester from Somerton is only 45 mins and easily reached on the outskirts of the town. I have no hesitation in recommending Somerton practise and their out of hours hospital in Dorchester. We are lucky to have such a great facility, here in Somerton and Dorchester.

Disappointed with MediVet decision to change their out of hours for the Somerton Practice from Bridgwater to Dorchester . This equates to a round trip of 100 miles for me! Bridgwater was 20 mile round trip which is acceptable. I am told this has been done as the provider in Dorchester is much cheaper. I don't believe that this was the driver for the decision. This is not a service. I have therefore had to leave the Somerton Practice which has looked after me extremely well for nearly 20 yrs Not happy actually really sad!
