Daniel Bitea

Lead Veterinary Surgeon

My name is Daniel Bitea and I am the Lead Veterinary Surgeon at Medivet Stoke-on-Trent. I have received my veterinary diploma in Romania at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca in June 2012 after six years of studying. In Autumn of 2012 I was employed at the small animal veterinary hospital Gini House near my home town of Baia Mare, in Romania. After a year and a half working there, I decided to move on and in Autumn of 2014 I had the opportunity to relocate to Denmark where I worked as a small animal mobile vet for the veterinary branch of Petworld company. After three years in Denmark I was recruited by a veterinary company from UK to work for them and in December 2017 I relocated to Birmingham. I worked as a vet for various vet practices for the next three years, all within the same company. In 2019 I enrolled in a veterinary certificate in small animal surgery with Improve International, a course that I finished in 2021. In Autumn of 2021 I received an offer to join Medivet Stoke-on-Trent as a lead vet, and since then I have worked here, minus a little gap in 2024. As a vet, I am mainly interested in the pathology of dogs and cat, with a further focus on surgery an ultrasound scanning. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family as well as listening to music and reading sci-fi books. Recently, I have added woodworking to my hobbies.

I’m leaving this review because our experience at this medivet branch was quite bad overall, and for the price one pays for vet visits, treatments, prescriptions, etc - it's pretty unacceptable. We recently moved to the area and booked a first consultation for one of our ferrets, with the intention of bringing the other two afterwards. The plan was to discuss flea treatment and have an implant fitted. One week before the appointment: We booked the consultation and implant fitting. No one mentioned any stock issues whatsoever. Day of the appointment: The clinic phoned to say the implant wasn’t in stock, despite the booking being made a week earlier. When I asked which strength they were ordering, I was told they didn’t have the 9.4mg and that it was the “only effective” option for ferrets - this is not accurate - most exotic vets recommend the 4.7mg implant for ferrets, and it is widely used. Only after I specifically asked did they admit they had the 4.7mg in stock, but they continued to push the more expensive 9.4mg option and insisted - over and over - the 4.7mg “might not work,” even though both my previous vet, another 2 vets, and an exotic‑vet friend of mine advised the opposite. It felt like they were trying to upsell the pricier implant rather than give accurate information. At the appointment, the vet barely examined him, fitted the implant, and rushed through the consultation. I then raised the flea issue, explained that all three ferrets needed treating and that one of them is very small. The vet told me to give the same product to all three and simply “give the small one less" - they also prescribed a flea treatment that turned out to be out of stock uk‑wide. A few days later: I phoned to change the prescription. The receptionist told me to “google a product” and they would prescribe whatever I found. This is not acceptable. It is the vet’s legal and professional responsibility to select an appropriate medication, check species and weight suitability, confirm availability, and ensure the product is safe. Passing that responsibility onto the owner is a failure of duty of care. I stupidly did follow their instruction and told them the product. After administering the treatment to two ferrets: I noticed the packaging stated it should not be used on ferrets under 800g, which our third ferret is - luckily he was the last one. A quick search showed it could be fatal for him as one of the ingredients is known to be toxic for ferrets of his weight. Next business day (monday): I called again to explain the situation. The receptionist told me they couldn’t prescribe anything because the small ferret hadn’t been examined, despite the fact that they had already advised me to treat all three. I mentioned the vet did not have a problem with it before, so I didn't understand what the issue was. She said she would speak to the vet and call back, but never did - how professional of them... So here are a few failures in basic veterinary standards: -Failing to provide accurate information about medication options, -Failing to check product availability before prescribing, -Advising me to adjust dosing myself, -Instructing me to search for my own prescription, -And failing to ensure the safety of the medication they told me to use. These are basic professional responsibilities, and none of them were handled correctly. We’ll be looking for a different practice, as this one has shown itself to be incompetent at best.

I would have preferred an appointment at my local vet but had to travel out of area due to lack of vet on their premises for 2 days which is not a great idea

Very efficient, easy to get an appointment and hardly had to wait to see the vet, it was only a annual vaccination for the cat but nevertheless very efficient.
